Colorado College intramural sports hosted their fourth Second Saturday Series event of the year last weekend. Traveling all the way from the American Midwest, the beloved pastime of cornhole made its way onto CC’s campus. Students faced off in a thrilling competition filled to the brim with suspense, achievement and bean bags.

With an original count of 19 teams registered to participate the tournament looked sound in its numbers. However, the highly regarded sport of cornhole was no match for the fresh powder Colorado received that same Saturday. By the time of the competition, seven teams had dropped out to pursue the mountains, leaving only 12 teams competing.

The drop in numbers had no effect on the operational status of the tournament. Play continued, and what ensued was a relatively unsurprising performance for a private liberal arts school found in the middle of Colorado.

“I wouldn’t say that anyone ran away with it,” said Andy Obringer, Assistant Director of the Adam F. Press Fitness Center.

Obringer did admit that a competitive atmosphere was still prevalent. Teams battled for many rounds and no victory was by any means easy. However, being an Ohio native, Obringer made sure to clarify his own skill level.

“I don’t think any of them would compete in my backyard barbeque,” he said.

Despite the shared passion of each team, only one pair could go home as cornhole champions. The high honor went to team “Supreme Fart,” featuring Shaelyn Sheaff  ’25 and Ayden Cherry ’24. In a fierce retelling, Sheaff described the scenes of the final inning as a “nail biter.” The team was neck and neck with their opponent for seemingly the entirety of the game until “Supreme Fart” was able to squeeze out a championship performance to surpass the required 21 points to win.

“Our chemistry was on point,” said Sheaff.

Remarkably, Sheaff and Cherry had started out the tournament on a loss. Such a result forced the two to make an uphill climb to reach victory. Sheaff credits her team’s resilience and success to their pre-tournament preparations. Sheaff cites the two had allegedly spent the previous week limiting their diets to nothing but corn. Cherry could not be reached for comment regarding the validity of Sheaff’s statement. Regardless, as to if “Supreme Fart’s” claims are true, it is indisputable that the team’s victory will remain cemented in CC intramural history.

While the result of the tournament should no doubt be the primary focus in its coverage, it is worth mentioning that the event produced an especially entertaining array of team names. When asked about the inspiration behind the name “Supreme Fart,” Sheaff said, “I thought there was a fifty-fifty chance [Director of Recreation and Fitness Center] Chris Starr would think it was funny… and she didn’t really think it was funny.”

Sheaff and Cherry’s team was not the only one attempting to garner the attention of the director of campus recreation as team “Chris Starry Night” could be found on the registration sheet as well. Many other teams saw the naming system as an opportunity to pay homage to the sport.

Some noteworthy appearances include “The Corn Holers,” “Corn on the Cob,” “Cornhub,” “Slob on this Cob,” and “The Bag Fondlers.” Others deviated from the pun-oriented trend with names such as “The Bo Nix Fan Club” and “Poop Hole.” One team even decided to pay homage to Douglas Adams and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” with their name: “The Salmon of Doubt.”

With the closing of the cornhole tournament, four more Second Saturday Series events remain for next semester. Those wishing to participate should consider preparing their sea legs as CC Intramurals plans to debut CC’s first ever ‘cardboard regatta’ for Block 5. Under the official name “SS Regatta,” the event will feature a competition in which students must build a boat out of provided materials and attempt to make their way across the length of Schlessman pool.

The event is sure to be filled with excitement, fun, and some Titanic-esque carnage. If nothing else, the cornhole tournament signifies the potential for the appearance of some priceless ship names.
