March 7: Pikes Peak Brewery Tour
You might be thinking: what ever came of that late night email from the last column? Well, here is your answer: Last Thursday, we took a little trip to visit our new friend Chris, the owner and founder of Pikes Peak Brewing Company. The company has been running for 12 years and now has two locations: one in Colorado Springs (the original) and one in Monument, Colo.
Throughout this tour we saw a sneak-peek of new beers, and learned an insane amount about how beer is made. Before this special look, our only thought about beer was: it is yummy and makes us drunk.
Now, however, we are basically pros.
When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed with a flight of beer and led through a back passage into the special room reserved for only the most important VIPs (aka us). This is where we got all the behind-the-scenes info that you lucky readers get to hear about.
Our flight started with the classic Ocean of Clouds hazy IPA. If you haven’t heard of it, you are missing out big time and didn’t read our article last week – go read it.
Upon arrival, Ocean of Clouds was as good as ever, arguably better because it was fresh out of the tap (straight from the creature). This time we got a whole flavor breakdown from the creator himself (no, not God, it’s Chris).
Its flavor palette includes a fruit forward and soft feeling in the mouth, leaving you with a fresh and very drinkable beer.
The next beer that we tried was the other hazy that they make called Mountain Fog, aka BIG hazy. When Chris says BIG he means BIG in every way. BIG alcohol by volume, clocking in at 8% – BIG flavor and BIG yummy. So, if you liked the Ocean of Clouds, you need to try this one – if you didn’t like it what is wrong with you, freak.
The third beer in the flight was called Blackberry Vanilla Milkshake Sour. When we first walked into the brewery, we saw this featured as a seasonal beer on the wall and actually gagged. It sounded disgusting, like so gross! Who wants beer that tastes like a milkshake? To put it shortly: we want it.
We do, it’s so motherf**king good. Literally delicious. A 6.5% beer designed to keep you toasty. I brought this beer home to my dad, and while he needed to warm up to the party that was going on in his mouth, he concluded that he would drink this beer again.
Good for teens and the elderly! Just kidding, that is obviously a joke, the elderly lost their sense of taste centuries ago.
Other than these three delicious beers, we were told that there are some new ones on the market that you should check out. Most importantly, a beer dubbed the “day wrecker”: a 10% imperial IPA called “The Incline”, Coming to liquor stores near you this April.
Additionally, there is a summer special that will replace the Blackberry Vanilla Milkshake Sour called the “Cherry Lime Sour”. Another 6.5% summer beer that will definitely give your mom a nip slip at the pool party.
All in all, we loved going on this brewery tour. Hopefully there will be more to come in Beer for Babes’s future. Stay tuned for next week’s edition.
