Between sitting in classrooms from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m and extracurriculars Colorado College students take on, finding time to watch films can be a task in itself.

Film students take on the extra viewing as part of their studies, with some watching as many as 10 feature-length or short films within a seven-day week. Since Theo Casper ’28 has started his film studies he continues to watch films recreationally.

“I watched Chloé Zhao’s films ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me,’ ‘The Rider’ and ‘Nomadland,’ with ‘Nomadland’ being my favorite,” Casper said.

As many film students anticipate the excitement of awards season, Nick Smela ’29 is already raving about the film studios that are beginning to release in the race for recognition.

“I’ve seen a bunch of good stuff recently, but “Primetime” is my standout new release of this block,” Smela said.

Though not a film student, Illyana Collins ’29 watched Louise Archambault’s “Irena’s Vow” during this block. Going into the film with high expectations, she found it different from what she anticipated, describing it as “unfortunately depressing.”

As film students continue to look ahead to upcoming releases, Smela is looking forward to seeing “Digger” this weekend. He says it “seems like a pretty obvious Tom Cruise Oscar push, but the reviews came out this morning and they’re pretty rough.”

What did I watch in this block? I was surprised by the outcome of “Together,”, which definitely captures that “what the heck is going on?” feeling. The film felt intimate and psychological at the same time, almost as if it were probing the complicated relationship between intimacy and intensity.
