Men’s Hockey: The Tigers played No. 4 Western Michigan University in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Frozen Faceoff quarterfinals on March 6 through 8 in Kalamazoo, Mich. The tournament was a best-of-three series, with the first team to win two games advancing to the next round.
In the first game, WMU struck first through Grant Slukynsky with a power play goal before Garrett Szydlowski made it 2-0 with just 21.2 seconds left in the first period. CC came out for the second period determined with goals from Owen Beckner and Seth Constance tying up the game at 2-2. Ultimately, Western Michigan closed out the first game with two more goals and an open net dagger to win 5-2.
In the second game the following day, CC knew that they needed a win to stay in the tournament, and it was Klavs Veinbergs who would put the Tigers up 1-0 in the first period. After holding the one-goal lead through the rest of the first period, all of the second period, and deep into the third period, the Broncos eventually broke through CC’s defense as Owen Michaels found a late equalizer for Western Michigan University.
