Hello readers, and welcome back to another tantalizing edition of Beer for Babes.
Unfortunately, due to Megan’s work schedule and Haley’s aggressive hangover that lasted multiple days, we skipped last week’s publication. We know you’re all curious what caused such an unbearable hangover. It specifically included our last home hockey game (in which we drank two boxes of wine each and got invited up to the box seats), then spiraled downtown to pursue multiple gin and tonics at Tony’s, Cowboys and then back to Tony’s again. It was all in good spirits, though, as we played cards with locals and fraternized with the Western Michigan hockey team.
Wow! This lineup did not bode well for our hearts and livers. We apologize for making you wait a whole two weeks for another review. So, to come back with a bang, this past week we had an impromptu Germanfest at our house, mostly inspired by the warm weather and the desire for a quality hot dog, or a Frankfurter as they were called at Wimbergs. The centerpiece, of course, was a blood orange kolsch from Crystal Springs Brewing Company. We chose a mild beer, clocking in at 4.9% ABV, to start drinking around 5 p.m. and prepare for Tony’s. We didn’t want to get too wild with it this week. Surprising, we know. We also had a surprise guest, Claire Lindsey ‘27, join us. Look out for her over the next few weeks as we train her to succeed us.
Megan loves a Kolsch, so we came into this with high hopes. And it lived up to it. A Kolsch is a German pale ale known for its crisp, light qualities. With the blood orange addition, this beer was tart, bright and slightly hoppy. It was “honestly perfect,” Megan said. Haley also vibed with it on first impressions, but after one and a half beers and still no dinner, things started to taste funky. Overall, this is a great light, not too sweet, fruity beer that we would recommend for one or two rounds. Past that, you might want to switch it up.
The burps were pleasant and aromatic, coming up and not too heavy on the stomach. Haley eventually tapped out early because she wanted to drink gin basil with the rest of the people (no surprise here). But she was the first to finish beer number one, so that has to count for something, right? Or is it just due to her chugging problem? The world may never know.
The can is cute, simple and to the point. No B.S. Canva on an iPad designs and no strange sayings. This beer paired well with our German hot dogs and mustard, a roommate dinner and an itch for Tony’s. We also hoped it would pair well with some grilling and stump outside, but the weather had other plans for us.
See y’all next week, with hopefully a sunny day and a yummy beverage in hand.
