The Campus Sleep-Out started last year as a way to connect students with their community and the outdoors on a basic and accessible level, but this year’s Sleep-Out didn’t include the option of sleeping out at all.

Despite numerous announcements urging students to bring their blankets and rent sleeping bags from Outdoor Ed, the sleep-out had to be moved inside the Worner Campus Center due to the high probability of rain and low temperatures overnight.

Worner was filled with students for the entirety of the six-hour Sleep-Out. The Benji’s and Colorado Coffee area became a makeshift stage for student bands Jabbawocky and Forklift, while the basement, first floor, and patio featured glow golf, arts and crafts stations, henna art, an Outdoor Ed Pop-up, board games, snack stands, giant hamster ball soccer and even a video game truck parked on Cascade.

“It just felt a lot more intimate and a lot more lively,” said Associate Director of Campus Activities Erika Perry. “Our goal for this year was to make it more fun for the students to make them want to come out; we really tried to ramp it up.”

According to Perry, the number of people at the sleep-out movie screening of The Princess Bride in Worner this year was triple the number compared to last year’s quad screening.

She said that while no formal planning has happened yet, some members of Campus Activities are planning to advocate for moving the event inside permanently and shifting the format to an evening hangout instead of an outdoor sleep-out.
