Brandy Williams, who downtown Colorado Springs voters elected to City Council on April 1, said she would like to establish a stronger connection between city government and Colorado College students.
“I want to appoint a liaison with Colorado College,” she told the Catalyst in an interview the day after the election. “I want to bring more information to the people.”
Williams is a former city councilwoman and current civil engineer.
She received roughly 37% of the vote on Tuesday, April 1, beating out four other candidates.
The third district covers all of downtown Colorado Springs, including CC, and was previously represented by Michelle Talarico.
The area encompasses a diverse range of voters, including families, students and local business owners. About 23% of registered voters turned out for the municipal election, casting a total of 77,720 ballots, according to initial election results.
In past years, municipal election turnout has hovered around 30%.
Turnout is typically much higher during the federal elections which take place in November. Critics have long wanted to move the city elections from April to November, in order to increase civic participation.
Williams last represented Colorado Springs in 2011. During her term, she successfully led a merger between UC Health and the Memorial Health Hospital system.
“I don’t think there’s a lot that I want to change per se. I think we just need to live our best life, but live it as a city… really taking our quality of life to the next level,” Williams said.
Her top issues during the campaign were wildfire preparedness, public safety and lowering taxes.
Williams was endorsed by The Colorado Springs Gazette and former Mayor John Suthers.
