Reid Arena was packed Sunday, Feb. 23, for the final home game of the women’s basketball team. The Tigers beat Trinity University 69-52, capping off a historic regular season.
With Sunday’s win, the No. 21 Tigers finished with a program-record 23 wins this year, beating the previous record of 21.
Additionally, the Tigers’ 13-0 home record is the most wins in Reid Arena in a season and is the second undefeated home record in program history. They are currently on a 12-game win streak, losing last to Texas Lutheran on Jan. 12.
In Sunday’s game, the Tigers shot a season-high of 30 three-pointers, scoring 10. Colorado College started strong, ending the first quarter up 25-16. Zoë Tomlinson ‘25 led the team with 11 points in the first.
The Tigers held Trinity to only four points in the second but struggled to find the same offensive success. At halftime, the score was 34-20 Tigers.
After the break, the Tigers kept their foot on the gas. At the end of the third quarter, Isa Nelson ‘27 hit a buzzer-beater three to put the Tigers up by 18.
The fourth quarter was much of the same, with the Tigers leading by 22 points with 3:47 remaining.
The senior quartet of Tomlinson, Healy Bledsoe, Kyle Rowland and Laura Strenk checked out together to a standing ovation from the Reid Arena crowd. Though this was their last home game, they will have further opportunity to etch this season into Colorado College history in their post-regular season campaign.
Tomlinson posted a statline of 27 points, 17 rebounds and five assists, all team highs. This was her 20th double-double of the season.
In a game against Austin College on Feb. 7, Tomlinson broke the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) rebounding record, vaulting over Southwestern’s Annie Bourne ‘15. Tomlinson is also Colorado College’s all-time rebounds leader.
“One game at a time,” said coach Katherine Auguste following Sunday’s win.
“I know it sounds cliche, but we are just truly doing our best in each practice leading up to each game. We’re excited to earn the right to keep competing, and in the postseason, we’ll kick it up a notch.”
The Tigers entered the Division III national rankings for the first time in program history this January, debuting at No. 25. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 21 and are the only ranked SCAC team.
The team travels to Irving, Texas this weekend to compete in the SCAC Championships. Due to their first-place finish in the SCAC’s Blue Division, Colorado College will have a first-round bye.
Last year, Colorado College was the No. 2 seed at the championships, falling to Trinity 64-54 in the final. The Tigers have lost in the championship final in the last four seasons, a streak they will need to break in order to win their first-ever SCAC title this weekend.
The SCAC Championship might not be the end of the season, either. A conference championship win would mean automatic qualification to the NCAA DIII Tournament. Even if they don’t win the conference title, they still would have a chance to qualify for an at-large bid.
Though their strong national ranking bodes well for selection, Auguste and the Tigers will hope to secure their first-ever bid with a win this weekend. On Saturday, March 1, they will face either the University of the Ozarks or Texas Lutheran for a semifinal game in Irving.
The winners will then advance to the SCAC final on Sunday, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
