The Second Saturday series is a staple of campus life and culture at Colorado College. On the second Saturday of every Block, the athletic department and campus recreation organizes an intramural tournament for all CC students to participate in.
Previous Second Saturday events have included sand volleyball, campus golf and pickleball tournaments. This Block, the Second Saturday event was cornhole.
Even before the tournament’s official start, participants arrived early to practice. The gym resonated with the sounds of bean bags hitting the boards — or, more often, missing and landing on the floor — alongside laughter and encouragement from teammates. The noise attracted onlookers to the balcony above the gym.
The tournament started at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 7 in the Adam F. Press Fitness Center recreation gym. Twelve teams competed, divided into three groups of four. The event began with pool play, with the top two teams from each group advancing to bracketed play.
Andy Obringer, Assistant Director at the Adam F. Press Fitness Center, organizes the Second Saturday events. The series began in the spring of 2023 and has been running ever since. Obringer aims to make these tournaments “a minor time commitment that people can compete in.”
This year’s winners were Wyatt Furda ‘27 and Mason Moore ‘28, competing under the team name The 19th Hole. They arrived early and practiced until the matches began.
In pool play, the duo dominated their three games, winning each 21–3. Their quick victories allowed extra time for practice and experimentation, during which they discovered that certain sets of bean bags offered an advantage. Sticking with the same set throughout, Furda and Moore secured their spot as the top team in their conference, earning a bye to the playoffs. During this break, they visited Colorado Coffee to rest and refocus while other teams continued to practice.
“I think it helped get our minds ready for playoffs,” said Moore. “You know, pool play is one thing, but playoffs are a different animal.”
Both teammates credited their “killer mentality” for their success.
“I think we delivered on that promise to be killer,” said Moore.
The duo lived up to the claim, winning all but one game by at least 10 points. Furda and Moore also plan to continue competing in future Second Saturday Cornhole Tournaments, promising, “We will be here for the rest of the cornhole events in the history of time that we are here.” Whether they fulfill this ambitious vow, The 19th Hole has already established itself as one of the most dominant teams in Second Saturday’s history.
Despite the competition, the tournament maintained a spirit of sportsmanship and community. After every game, teams, including The 19th Hole, shook hands. This camaraderie embodies the essence of Second Saturday: a blend of friendly competition and inclusivity. Both Furda and Moore extended gratitude to their mothers, whom they credited for their success.
The next Second Saturday event is the SS Regatta, where students will form teams to create boats out of cardboard and race them in the pool. The event features three awards: the Speed Boat Award for the fastest boat, the Boeing Super Max Award for the best theming and design, and the Titanic Award for the most dramatic sinking. Interested students can sign up on the athletics website.
