Hello readers and welcome back to another Beer for Babes. This week, we had two guests join us (Anya Jones ‘25 and Tesha Ferrell ‘25) to try Avery Brewing Company’s Electric Sunshine Fruited Tart Ale, at 5.0% ABV. Our tasting process started out strong, with the man at Weber Street Liquor store letting us know that Adam Avery, an acquaintance of his and founder of Avery Brewing Company, looks like an Elven character from Lord of the Rings. Let us know if you see any resemblance!
This sour ale has hints of papaya, kiwi, pineapple, and huckleberry, which we found unusual yet pleasant pairings. As we took our first sips, we were shocked by the flavor journey we were taken on, with first notes of slightly tropical fruits with a sour vibe, then an aftertaste of sweet huckleberry. As we continued to drink, it was not too sweet but much too bubbly, and it was surprisingly slightly salty –– allowing for a pleasant experience. It was a 100% beer for babes, playing into the stereotype of a fruity little beer for some fruity little girls. The owner of Webers, who is a woman we might add, recommended the Electric Sunshine Fruited Tart ale which we can now say is girlboss approved through and through.
However, the can design was unfortunate. While not shown in our drawing, there was an off putting sketch of a woman who looked like she needed some aquaphor. We did not enjoy her vibe one bit, and are wondering if she is a real person. In addition, Anya had strong opinions about using the word “paradise” alongside vibrant and colorful to describe this ale –– paradise is not an adjective! Overall, we were not big fans of this can.
We drank this at lunchtime, skewing our pairings, but we all agreed this beer would pair well with a large sandwich. Tesha painted us a beautiful word picture for this pairing: a crispy yet soft roll, with roast beef (crazy take, we know) and melted cheese on top, paired with cold veggies, like an iceberg lettuce. We also agreed chips and salsa might pair well, or, going with the fruity theme, an açaí bowl. Like we said, we may have been hungry while drinking this beer.
