Word around the Block is that the Second Saturday Series for Block 5 is something truly meant for everyone, and dare I say, may take more brain power than athleticism. Titled “SS Regatta,” CC students of all grade levels are welcome to participate in a construction and strategy event that brings a fun sport competition to an entirely different level. A tradition Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has upheld for years, Colorado College is taking its own spin on the event.

The main objective is to move a self-made, floating cardboard boat across 25 yards, one length of the CC pool. Materials that will be provided for every team include: cardboard, duct tape (one 60-yard roll per team), scissors, and a box cutter. The catch? Only the items listed above may be used to build the racing boats.

Happening this Saturday, Feb. 3, the boat building process will take place in the El Pomar Sports Center, Great Hall, between 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Boat inspections will occur at 2:00 p.m. and the race will begin promptly at 2:15 p.m.

A maximum of four people are allowed at the start line to assist, and each team must have at least one and a maximum of two rowers inside the boat. Additional team members can help with the boat design and build only.

Awards will be allotted to the team that completes the race in the fastest amount of time (Speed Boat Award), the most spectacular sinking (Titanic Award), and best design and theme (Design Award).

Roster submissions close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb 2. So, get to researching, gather your science, technology, engineering, and mathematics friends, your athletic friends along with your creative art major friends, and compile the most dangerous team possible. Then be prepared to wake up ready to grind this Saturday for an event that certainly pushes the boundaries for what an athletic endeavor can look like.
