The weekend before Block Break, beginning Feb. 7, the women’s varsity and men’s club indoor track teams competed in the Colorado Running Company Invitational.
According to Marilyn Jackson ’22 and Captain Liza Huschle ’20, it was a record-breaking, exciting start to the season. Huschle said, “The team overall had an awesome start to the season. Not only were multiple records broken, but also multiple athletes tried new events and pushed themselves out of their comfort zone. Everyone showed so much support for one another through cheering people on, encouraging each other, and offering advice.”
Jackson, who competes in both the triple and long jump for the Tigers, felt that the high point of the weekend was how the team came together. “My favorite part of the meet was all of the support everyone gave each other and the snacks that our head coach brought. Those came in clutch.”
Both Huschle and Jackson would like to shoutout Camille Weaver ’21 and Michael Gorman ’21 for an extraordinary performance. Weaver broke school records for both the indoor long jump and the indoor 60-meter hurdles, with a 5.37-meter jump and 9.14-second time, respectively. Gorman ran the indoor 60-meter dash with a time of 7.13 seconds, breaking the men’s indoor track school record. Weaver was also awarded Athlete of the Meet honors at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships.
Despite their solid foundation, the team sees a lot they can improve upon going forward to ensure a victorious season. Huschle commented that the team just needs to keep supporting each other — mentally and physically. “Moving forward, it is really important to continue to support each other both on and off the track. Track (as a sport) can be really mentally challenging, and our success will be determined by a strong, encouraging, and collaborative team dynamic.”
It will be interesting to watch both the women’s varsity and men’s club team continue to grow and perform this season. If this meet is any indication, they are prepared to secure a very successful year for the Tigers.
