A Welcome Message From Your 2019–20 Inclusion Committee



Welcome to the 2019–20 school year. For some of you, this is your last first block; for others it is your first. No matter your year on campus, the Inclusion Committee seeks to be your suggestion box. We want to know about your experience with inclusivity or lack thereof, on and off campus. We want to know problems you’ve had, and we want to know what changes you’d like to see made at Colorado College.

In the past, the Inclusion Committee has been heavily involved in LoCCal, the External Review of Racism at CC, and town halls soliciting or addressing student concerns. We’ve taken concerns from one-on-one conversations with students all the way to President Jill Tiefenthaler. As your elected officials, we are able to represent you in all facets of college life. This is a responsibility we do not take lightly.

This year, your Inclusion Committee is composed of a vice president and four members. I’m serving as your VP this year, and I’m always accessible at h_taylorschall@coloradocollege.edu if you’d like to talk about issues on campus, or any other topic you can think of. I’m a senior sociology major; I use they/them pronouns; and I’m a former co-chair of EQUAL.

Also serving you are Sakina Bhatti ’22 (she/her pronouns), Sally Hedderman ’21 (she/her pronouns), Jacqueline Nkhonjera ’20 (she/her pronouns), and Nicolette Gordillo-LaRiviere ’22 (she/her pronouns). I’m thrilled to be working alongside such spectacular women this year.

So far this block, we have discussed a student driven anti racist group on campus and have begun reaching out to the co-chairs of organizations on campus that serve marginalized communities to see how we may be of service.

Additionally, we’ve been working with Ethan Greenberg, student body president, on a proposal for President Tiefenthaler on the way that anti-racist internships and grants at CC ought to work, who should oversee them, and what CCSGA’s role should be. Trust that when the project is finalized, you will be the first to know. As the year continues and the college makes more anti-racist efforts, the Inclusion Committee will actively seek and report on your feedback.

Our meeting time is changing Block 2, so please email me if you’re interested in attending so I can give you the correct time. Similarly, if you want to see how your student government addresses all issues on campus, you’re invited to join us at 7 p.m. on Thursdays in the Yalich Boardroom inside the Spencer Center.

Lastly, a quick plug: elections for the Inclusion Committee and other offices are near the end of the year, but it’s never too early to consider running. CCSGA gets more done than most students think, and it’s more important now than ever that marginalized students occupy more offices as the anti-racist report is worked into daily life.

I’ll leave you with this message: take up as much space as you’re able this year and all those that follow. If possible, the Inclusion Committee would love to join you in doing so.
