This past weekend, Colorado College men’s rugby took down the United States Air Force Academy in its friendly 7s match. This win, along with several other recent tournament wins, has motivated the team to work even harder and has boosted the members’ confidence as they prepare to travel to Las Vegas on March 1. There, they will compete to qualify for a national championship for the Small College Rugby Association National Championship tournament.

“We’ve been doing very well this season,” Gus Childres ’21 said. “We had a three-team tournament recently and beat two of our rivals, Adams State University and Cara Springs University.”

The rugby teamwon this tournament by a large margin and the team channeled that success into their tournament this past weekend at the Air Force Academy, defeating the AFA team by a margin of 19–12. In the second battle, CC pulled away early, beating Air Force in a 26–14 finish.

“The captains have really showed their leadership and commitment to the team,” Garrett Pilgrim ’22 said. “They’ve made all of the new players feel welcomed and included through team bonding activities like the shaving-heads party as well as team ski trips to Arapahoe Basin and other mountains nearby.”

The team practices three times per week and weight lifts in the mornings at the Adam F. Press Fitness Center on days they do not have practice. This schedule is quite intense for a club sport, but given the team’s success, it’s been worth it.

“The practice schedule really shows how committed the team is to doing well,” Doug Norberg ’22 said. “The schedule is preparing us super well for our upcoming national qualifier tournament in Las Vegas this weekend.”

Thomas Nugent ’21 is concussed for the season but knows that the team is in good hands and is set up for success in its upcoming tournament. “With the leadership from our captains Ethan Widoff, Cian McGillicuddy, and Aidan Prior, I know the team can do big things in Vegas,” Nugent said.

Colorado College men’s rugby  is 6–2 as they head into the National Small College Rugby Association National Championship Qualifiers in Las Vegas this coming weekend.
