Our intention with this week’s issue of The Catalyst was to try, in whatever small way we could, to cast light on the hateful, shameful, violent, transphobic racist email that was sent to the campus community this week. We hoped that we could use the newspaper to offer marginalized voices a platform to voice their outrage, their fear, and their hopes for this community that we call home. We, as an editorial staff, in our capacity as both professionals and people, thoroughly reject the despicable white supremacy ideologies espoused in the email. We reaffirm our efforts to offer an outlet and a place for dialogues to be held, for radical ideas to be shared, and to help the community recover from this incident and become better than it is. The College clearly has a lot of room to grow—from the ways in which white students are unconscious of how they benefit from white supremacy, to the overt bias which some professors exhibit, to the inherent problems in the housing system, to campus culture surrounding the outdoors. A catalyst is, by definition, something that causes an event or makes a chemical reaction go faster. We hope that The Catalyst can help Colorado College expunge white supremacy, and our ears, our pages, and our hearts are open to any and all submissions.
