Red Rocks Canyon Open Space is the perfect place for any student to go out and have an amazing time in the outdoors, and it is even closer to campus than Garden of the Gods. Though it’s safer to drive over to Red Rocks (due to busy roads and highways), biking to the Red Rocks Open Space is possible for those of you who are car-less.

Red Rocks Canyon Open Space also has more trails than GOG, ranging in difficulty, length, and steepness. I personally recommend taking some of the hiking trails that go deeper into the space to really see the true beauty of the area. There are a couple of trails lead you to two ponds farther into the space. The reflection of the red rocks in the water would make any National Geographic photographer jealous.

There’s more than just great hiking at Red Rocks Open Space, for those of you with furry friends, dogs and horses are allowed in the area. Trail rides are permitted for those interested in anything equine-related. The Upper and Lower Dog Loops are off-leash areas, so feel free to let your pet roam around for a bit and enjoy the fresh air as much as you do.

Not only are animals allowed in the area, but there are many mountain bike trails as well. There is a free ride bike park for all cyclists on the east end of the first parking lot. All trails except the Contemplative trail are open for mountain biking.

When there is snow on the ground during the winter, Red Rocks Canyon Open Space is great for Nordic skiing. Many of the trails are suitable for cross-country skiers of all levels.

There are great climbing opportunities at Red Rocks as well, especially slab climbing. There are over eighty-five technical climbing routes set up at Red Rocks, though these are not for everyone. In order to climb at Red Rocks, you must be registered through the Garden of the Gods visitor center. The routes are rated fourth class to 5.13. Though the red rock formations are extremely tempting for some light rock scrambling, it is not allowed and you might get in trouble.

Additionally, albeit unexpectedly, paragliding is an official activity for Red Rocks Canyon Open Space as well. There is a single launch point for paragliders and many instructions and requirements must be followed, but it is an option. Red Rocks Open Space is the perfect place for any of these day-long activities when you might not have more than a few hours to spend off campus.
