Save Money Crew, a Chicago based collective/squad has an impressive roster: Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Joey Purp, Donnie Trumpet, just to name a few. One member of the crew, Towkio, just dropped a new mixtape.
Thanks to Towkio’s involvement with the Save Money Crew, the mixtape features an impressive roster of collaborations from the collective as well as other producers, allowing the mixtape to hit the ground running. The album features Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Donnie Trumpet and some fire beat makers, Kaytranada and Lido. These collaborations create a very eclectic feel for the album as a whole. And if those reasons weren’t enough of an incentive to give the mixtape a listen, Towkio brought the likes of The Social Experiment, Chance the Rappers new project/band, to help produce the album.
Towkio dropped a single from the mixtape a while back called “Heaven Only Knows,” featuring Lido, Chance the Rapper, and Eryn Allen Kane. This song gives a good hint of what vibes the mixtape has to offer. It also gives us a glimpse into what Towkio wants to do with his music, as well as the objectives behind the Save Money Crew.
“It’s my job to make you think, and make music that you feel,” said Towkio in the song. “It’s Save Money, we an army full of generals here to push the envelope.”
It would seem, then, that Towkio and the Save Money Crew are trying to bring something new to the game with their music. Towkio wants people to feel and think after and while listening to this mixtape.
Although Towkio wishes to push the envelope of the hip hop game with his music, this mixtape seems to be lacking foresight while Towkio appears to still be searching for his sound. This mixtape appears to be more of an exploration; while it has an overall upbeat feel, each song has its own unique touch. The songs featuring Chance definitely reflect his sound and the songs produced by Kaytranada and Lido are definitely influenced by their own music; however, those that aren’t seem to lack a unique sound we can attribute to Towkio himself.
Although the mixtape lacks a distinct identity, that doesn’t mean that it did not put Towkio on the map; Towkio is definitely someone to watch. Once he finds his sound, there is no doubt that Towkio will be a household name like Chance.
