The rain came down down as Will Schube, a senior, came in from overseeing an intramural softball game on the Armstrong quad. “I thought they might cancel this one but it looks like not,” he joked. Intramural sports have always carried on in the ever-changing weather of Colorado.
Intramural sports have been a long-lasting Colorado College tradition. CC has proudly promoted sports from flag football to dodgeball to inner tube water polo. Throughout this rainy spring, teams have still been showing up for games of softball. IM sports ftake the place of high school athletics without committing the large amount of time required to participate in a collegiate varsity sport.
Many students come from competitive organized sports in high school only to have those hours in the afternoon spent practicing and playing suddenly vanish. This is where IM sports come to the rescue. “It’s great to come from being a high school athlete and be able to do this,” said Schube. “I can fill the void left from playing high school sports without dedicating way too much time to it.”
Schube has been participating in and directing intramural softball throughout the 2015 spring season. Schube’s team, the Rockford Peaches, is playing its fourth consecutive softball season and hopes to come out on top.
“We’ve had the same team for four years and we’ve always been having fun,” said Schube. “This year we hope to win it all.” Schube’s team is coming into Thursday’s championship game riding a wave of success. “I think we’ve got it this year,” he said.
The team celebrates their victories with a tradition that has stayed with them throughout their four years at CC. “We go out to center field at the end of the game, and I give a little pep talk,” said Schube. “We do a Rockford Peaches team chant. It’s a great little tradition.”
Senior Henry Trueheart has been alongside Schube in IM softball. “There has been no greater athletic achievement in my life than playing for the Rockford Peaches because, at the end of the day, I know every single member of our squad is as dedicated to the sport as I am and that transcends the simple ideas of winning or losing,” said Trueheart.
The Peaches take their camaraderie into the final for IM softball on Thursday evening.
