If the child of LinkedIn and Facebook met the child of Instagram and TripAdvisor and, in turn, they reproduced, that child would be Gociety. While each has a different aim, all of the sites on this family tree have a big influence on their outdoorsy grandchild.
Similar to Linkedin, Gociety lets you build and display your outdoor resume by listing users’ experiences and levels in outdoor activities like skiing, climbing, mountain biking, etc., and by allowing others view it. Additionally, like applying to a job, other members can view your profile when they are planning a trip to see if you would be a good fit for their trip.
Gociety allows users to send messages and add friends, like Facebook. You can also create and post trip plans that are similar to posting a Facebook status or events. You can also join other users’ events. Also, like Instagram, you can post photos and rack up likes, or as they call it, “high fives.”
When planning a trip, you can search similar trips and read trip reports. Similar to TripAdvisor’s reviews, you can also search trips by action, location, and time. Additionally, you can view all the posted trips in your area and request to join them.
The block plan makes it hard to organize spontaneous day or weekend trips because everyone is typically busy with different schedules and homework loads.
However, Gociety will help you break out of the CC bubble, meet some outdoorsy locals, and plan trips to fit your schedule.
My favorite aspect of Gociety is the ability to search upcoming trips in any area for any activity. A downside to this network is that it is still very new, so there are neither many users nor an abundance of trips.
However, this is not a limitation; Gociety has just not reached their full potential to become an all-encompassing adventure trip planner, network, and social media outlet.
You can join Gociety online, and/or download the app. Additionally, Gociety is hosting an Outdoor Trivia Night at Fieldhouse Brewery next Wednesday, March 4 with free beer and gear giveaways.
Join Gociety and spread the word to help grow this new source of adventure social media.
