Junior forward James Lonergan is first and foremost, an inside presence for Coach Andy Partee’s men’s basketball squad. Lonergan sprinted out of the gates early this season, averaging 13.5 points through the Tiger’s first two games. By Thanksgiving, Lonergan was settled into a solid leadership role for the Tigers. However, before the Thanksgiving Invitational Lonergan suffered a thumb injury, which put him out of action until January 30, 2015, when he returned against Schreiner University. While Lonergan was not able to be the type of impact player he normally is during his inactive stretch, he made his presence felt off of the floor. This past week, Lonergan’s efforts were recognized, as he was selected as the SCAC Character & Community Male Student Athlete of the Week. Lonergan was recognized for his work both within the college community and the efforts he has made to reach out a friendly tiger paw to the Colorado Springs community. Most recently, Lonergan was an integral part of his team’s close connection with local 9-year old Carter Gates. Gates, who is currently battling leukemia, appeared in the Tiger’s December 16 matchup vs. Johnson & Wales. During his stretch of injury, Lonergan could often be seen on the bench keeping Gates company. Last Spring, Lonergan and his teammates went on a paintball outing through Operation TBI Freedom, which pairs veterans who suffer from traumatic brain injuries with local groups. Lonergan is working to cement plans to repeat the event this year. Lonergan’s accomplishments are not limited to the basketball court, as can be seen in his stellar academic record. Lonergan holds a 3.66 GPA and is an executive member of the Colorado College Honor Council. As Lonergan works his way back into the thick of the Tiger’s rotation, his talents will surely help out his surging team, who have put together two straight conference wins. Lonergan is an essential part of the Tiger’s efforts on the court, but also brings a selfless attitude of service and philanthropy to his team off the court.
