Senior All-American Austin Howlett was the lone Tiger to represent Colorado College at this weekend’s Air Force diving competition. Howlett held strong as the sole Division III athlete against a crowd of Division I divers. Howlett remarks, “I did well. I got 17th out of 27 which means I was about to out-dive 10 Division I divers.”
Howlett competed in the three-meter diving competition on Friday, Jan. 30. He did not miss the finals by much; the University of Denver diver who seized the last spot in the finals by coming in 12th had a six-dive score of 291.30. Howlett finished with 266.40 and was a mere 24.90 points from qualifying. He notes that his score was result of being “a little off on my dives, but I was consistent.”
The All-American looks forward to translating his successes in a division one meet to further SCAC match ups. “It was great to compete against such a high level of competition. Being in the meet definitely motivated me,” says Howlett. He has seen success through out the season in SCAC competition.
In the last week of December, Howlett was named the SCAC Diver of the Week for the fourth time when he set school and pool records with a score of 412.80 in the three-meter event, setting marks that qualify him for the NCAA tournament, and maintaining his impressive undefeated season.
The Tigers are back at it in Rockwall, Texas on Feb. 11 for the SCAC championship. The women’s side failed to compete in the Air Force Diving Competition because of class scheduling issues but expects to travel to compete for the Tigers in the SCAC Championship.
