Andy Benger, CC’s most popular Campus Safety Officer, talks about not riding a Segway, driving students home, the student who scared 15 years off his life, NCIS and his favorite joke.
Where are you from?
I am from a little country village called Snodland in Kent, England.
How did you start working for campus safety?
I started my career in the security industry working at The Broadmoor Hotel in 1999. Since then, I have also worked at Memorial Hospital in the behavioral unit, and with Hospital Shared Services working at a few local power plants. I was looking for a change in scenery when I found my new home at Colorado College in 2010.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love interacting with the students, watching them grow and develop, becoming our future leaders. Our student body is filled with creativity. I really enjoy walking the halls, viewing the art students create with their imaginations.
Is it hard working such irregular hours?
It is difficult working weird hours, especially since it affects the time I spend with my wife and family. However, the Colorado College family makes my work hours more comfortable and rewarding.
What is the craziest situation you’ve had to deal with on the job?
One night I was checking buildings and went into Shove Chapel. It was pitch black, and out of nowhere the whole chapel erupted with classical music from the organ. It was a student that had been given permission to practice at Shove. He preferred to play without very little light (just a pen light to see the music) and in the middle of the night. After scaring 15 years off my life, I did ask him to play the score from Phantom of the Opera. He kindly played, while I sat and enjoyed the music. So, this night went from a little scary and crazy to being very pleasant and enjoyable.
Do you like driving students around after they’ve been partying or is it annoying?
Although sometimes students get loud or annoying, I like seeing them home safe. This time with the students also gives me an opportunity to get to know them and hear about their lives, interests, and families. For the most part, I actually get a sense of accomplishment helping students in this way.
Are you excited for fall?
I am excited for every season. I especially like fall because it gives me the chance to get to know new students. The only time of year I don’t like is when the students are away on break.
What is your favorite TV show?
I love watching NCIS. Gibbs is the man!
Do you know any good jokes?
One day a tiger was walking through the jungle. The tiger saw two men relaxing under a tree. One was reading a newspaper, and the other was writing feverishly on a computer.
The tiger leapt on the man with the newspaper, and ate him up. The tiger did not bother the other man at all. That’s because any predator knows that readers digest but writers cramp. And that’s my tiger joke.
Do you wish y’all had Segways?
Heck no, how would I bring four students home on a Segway?
