Last year, Colorado College celebrated its 150-year anniversary. The past century has created a rich history full of education, innovation and for some students, paranormal activity.

“Last year in our room we had fairy lights and to turn them on and off, you had to physically click the remote,” said Lucia Metz ‘28, a former Mathias second-floor resident. “They would flicker sometimes and we were really into the idea that there was a spirit in our room, so we said, if you are in here, turn them off and it happened.”

Metz is not alone in her speculation about otherworldly activity on the CC campus. Some users of an online message board Yik Yak have expressed concerns about strange noises. One student, Sam Mullen ‘24, mentioned these noises to a maintenance worker.

“I was talking to them about how [Bemis Residence Hall] is old and breaking down and the guy said there were gremlins in the building,” he said. Mullen continued to ask the worker, “ghosts too?” to which he got the one-word response “probably.”

The housing office says they “do not think the residence halls are haunted.”

A member of the housing department, Lisa Smith, however, does not deny there is something strange going on in the basement of Bemis.

Smith says she remembers going to work in the basement every morning when “all the furniture would be moved.”
