Six injuries were reported after an electric vehicle crashed into the wall of the King Soopers grocery store at 1750 W. Uintah, less than two miles from the Colorado College campus.
The call about the crash came in at 4:12 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. No fatalities have been reported.
According to a statement from the Colorado Springs Police Department, the incident was accidental and the driver of the vehicle is fully cooperating with investigations.
KRDO reports that the driver had entered the parking lot and was driving eastbound toward the building when it accelerated to a high speed and drove into the building.
The driver was one of six injured individuals who were transported to the local hospital.
Photos from the scene show that the vehicle nearly hit the checkout registers.
CC senior Theo Braatz was in the King Soopers at the time of the crash. He said he was waiting in the checkout line at the front of the store when he heard a large crash and was knocked off his feet.
“I stood up and got away from where I was as quickly as possible and turned around and there was a car in the middle of the store,” Braatz said. “People were yelling.”
Braatz witnessed King Soopers workers assisting people who had been cut by glass and said he did not see the driver of the vehicle. He said King Soopers workers evacuated the store as quickly as possible, and he drove home with no confirmed injuries.
A statement issued by King Soopers says, “We are saddened to hear of the unfortunate incident that occurred at our store located at 1750 W. Uintah St. We are cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the incident. The safety and well-being of our customers and associates remain our top priority and will continue to guide our decisions.”
The store is closed as of Wednesday, Nov. 5.
