Welcome back to Beer for Babes, we know you missed us last week as it was our first week we’ve missed since staring our review. Truly a tragic loss for all. We’re so sorry. Anyways, after our little “sabbaticals” we are pleased to welcome a special guest in this article: Izzy’s dad. This week, we had a pecan beer from Taos that was simply named ‘Pecan Beer,’ weighing in at 5.39% ABV. Yeah, you heard that right. Why not round up to 6%? We have no idea.
Sweet, simple and to the point. This was our very first beer in a bottle. It truly looks as though it came from a pecan farm and as if the old man who runs the farm drew this design. Very old timey and nature-esque. Our friend who was with us is from New Mexico and was confused that they put so much green on the label. Yet they did include a lot of green, and as far as we could see, there was not much green around us in Taos.
The first impression of this beer scared us. We were worried we were about to have a repeat of the Speculoos Cookie Butter beer, but the more we drank the less scared we got. That is not to say it was great though. It tasted like what you would expect from a pecan beer, very nutty and weirdly sweet. For Izzy’s dad, on the other hand, it was nostalgic and reminiscent of picking pecans as a kid. There was also very minimal burping with this beer and, as we learned from our brewery tour that our loyal fans will remember: no burps = bad beer. So far that rule hasn’t failed us yet.
Now this is where this beer got interesting: the chug. Typically, as many of you know, we are really bad at chugging but this week our special guest blew us out of the water. HE FINISHED THE ENTIRE THING! It was absurdly horrifying yet incredibly impressive (and HOT). We are now diligently training to reach that elite level of chug one day in the distant future. With 53 seconds left at the end and stomachs feeling like they were about to burst; we weren’t super impressed with this beer, and we wouldn’t drink it again, but the legendary chug made up for everything.
We love you Taos—though we do not love your beer (the single one we sampled). It was between this pecan beer and a green chili—we’re feeling like we chose the wrong one.
