The housing department is redoing the selection process after widespread outrage among rising juniors over their time slot assignments. Now, seniority will be the first factor taken into consideration, and time slots will be reassigned. Housing detailed the changes in an email to students earlier today.
The Catalyst reported earlier today that the director of the housing department offered four students a West Campus apartment after they raised concerns with the office.
“Thank you for your outreach and feedback on the housing selection process,” the email began. “We understand that this process is important, and we appreciate your patience as we work to improve it.
New timeslots will be sent out tomorrow at 1 p.m., and seniority will be taken into consideration before other factors, like how fast students completed each portion of the housing application. Before the change, seniority was the last factor that housing considered when assigning time slots, according to an email they sent to students earlier this week.
Selection for rising juniors will begin on Feb. 24 and end on Feb. 26. Rising sophomores will select housing starting on Feb. 27.
“The way the criteria worked together didn’t align with our philosophy,” Edwin Hamada, the Associate Vice President of Student Life, told The Catalyst.
He also emphasized that even with the changes to the process, not all rising juniors are guaranteed an apartment both because there aren’t enough apartment beds and because some rising juniors may elect to live with rising sophomores.
The changes come after days of anger among current sophomores over having later time slots than current freshmen, students allegedly buying and selling selection times, and the financial burden of potentially having to pay for a full meal plan again.
